NEW: Education Green Paper

Premier Anna Bligh and Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson have provided Queenslanders with the opportunity to shape the future of Queensland’s education system.

Launching the paper, A Flying Start for Queensland Children, at the State Library of Queensland, Ms Bligh said Queenslanders’ views would be pivotal in making more than $350million in education changes.

“This discussion paper is about the future of education in Queensland,” Ms Bligh said.

It outlines proposals in a number of areas including:

1. Improving children’s development, wellbeing and school readiness

“Education is a partnership of parents, teachers, the community and government – they have the right to say how our children are educated.

“The Queensland Government has already lifted Queensland education by introducing a prep year and undertaking one of the biggest education infrastructure programs ever seen.

“Our children are performing better in 17 of the 20 national testing areas and our $10million a day in education infrastructure spending is placing state-of-the-art facilities and technology at our children’s fingertips.

“We are also undertaking the biggest investment in early childhood services in Queensland’s history by constructing 240 additional kindergartens and providing a subsidy to Long Day Care Centres so they can employ more trained specialist teachers.

“We are making a significant investment in our schools and education system so it is important we get it right by debating the paper’s recommendations.”

Ms Bligh said the Green Paper reflected the Queensland Government’s Toward Q2 Smart goals for 2020 – that all children would have access to a quality early childhood education and three out of four Queenslanders would hold trade, training or tertiary qualifications.

Education and Training Minister Geoff Wilson said the Government was driving improved results in literacy, numeracy and science, in response to Professor Geoff Masters’ review of education in Queensland.

“Queensland students’ NAPLAN results improved last year but there is more work to be done,” Mr Wilson said.

“Queensland aims to be among the highest-performing states in literacy and numeracy by 2012.”

Mr Wilson said community forums would be held across the state to discuss the ideas put forward in the Green Paper.

Queenslanders have until 30 June 2010 to contribute to the discussion paper via email, post or through consultation forums to be held across the state from February to June 2010.
