$1 Million sport and recreation boost for children in care

The Bligh Government will provide up to $1 million in funding to help children in care participate in sport and recreation activities.

Stirling Hinchliffe MP said it was important that all children were provided with opportunities to participate in sport and recreation.

“Sport can break down barriers, boost self esteem, promote team work and social cohesion,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“With sign on days for soccer, rugby, hockey, netball and other sports happening this weekend and in coming weeks, it is wonderful that the Bligh Government has been able to provide this support to foster carers and the children they care for.

“This initiative will help us ensure that children in care have the ability to lead active, healthy and happier lives.

Minister for Child Safety Phil Reeves said funding is available now and carers will be reimbursed a maximum of $300 for each child in their care to cover sport and recreation expenses.

Mr Reeves said few people realise that Queensland’s more than 4,000 carers are volunteers.

“They receive only an allowance to help them cover the basic costs of providing safe homes for more than 6,500 children and young people across the state,” he said.

Mr Reeves said the one-off funding would be available for children’s participation in sport and recreation throughout 2010.

Mr Reeves said the Bligh Government provided more funding for sport and recreation services than any other state or territory government.
